NZ New. The preferred Model x the 100D. Unlike the P100D which is prone to shredding tyres and has less range, the P100D offers 0-100 in 4.9 sec. The 100D has the LONGEST RANGE , and delivers DUAL MOTOR AWD power and traction

While the P100D is objectively "cooler" and faster, many experienced Tesla owners and second-hand buyers actually prefer the 100D.

Here is why the "non-performance" 100D model is often considered the smarter choice over the P100D:

1. Better Reliability (The "LDU" Issue)

The P100D uses a Large Drive Unit (LDU) in the rear to achieve its massive power. In older models (like 2017), these units are notorious among the community for a specific failure: a coolant seal that can leak internally.

100D: Uses two smaller, more modern, and generally more reliable drive units.
P100D: The LDU's "coolant delete" mod is a common topic of discussion because if that seal fails out of warranty, it can be a $6,000-$10,000 repair.

2. Efficiency and Real-World Range
The 100D is the "efficiency king"

It was rated for more range from the factory (about 10-15 km more than the P100D).
Because the 100D motors are identical front and back, they can share the load more efficiently. The P100D's massive rear motor is heavier and creates more mechanical drag, meaning you'll see higher energy consumption ($Wh/km$) even when you aren't flooring it.

3. Lower Maintenance Costs
The P100D's extreme torque is hard on the car's physical components:

Tire Wear: Owners of P-models often report replacing rear tires significantly more often. The Model X is already heavy; adding "Ludicrous" launches can shred a set of tires in half the time a 100D would.
Half-Shafts: A common Model X issue is "shudder" during acceleration caused by the front half-shafts. The extra power in a P100D exacerbates this wear, leading to more frequent service visits.

4. Better Value for Money

For most drivers, the 100D's 0-100 km/h time of ~4.9 seconds is already "stomach-churning" fast for an SUV.
The extra speed of the P100D is a party trick that most owners stop using after the first month, making the extra cost hard to justify for a daily driver.

5. Suspension Longevity
While both have air suspension, the P100D is often driven harder and comes with larger (22") wheels more often than the 100D. This combination leads to a harsher ride and faster wear on bushings and suspension links compared to a 100D typically kept on 20" wheels.
