We’re excited to share that Armstrong’s will be bringing BAIC to New Zealand, adding a new soft and off-road focused marque to our family of brands. BAIC is a Fortune 500 manufacturer established in 1958 and known globally for its SUV expertise, advanced powertrains and strong off-road capability. The brand will launch here in early 2026 with two models. The award winning X55 compact SUV and the B30 medium SUV will headline the range, with more models to follow later in the year.

BAIC brings substantial global scale and experience. The company operates an R&D network across seven locations in five countries and has Vehicle and KD factories in more than 30 countries and regions. BAIC products are sold in over 80 markets worldwide and the group maintains major manufacturing partnerships with Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai in China. BAIC is also the largest single shareholder of Mercedes-Benz.

Our partnership is an important part of BAIC International’s strategy to expand further into Oceania and other highly regulated markets. BAIC International Chairman Mr Wang Jianhui says the company looks forward to offering New Zealanders a fun and rewarding driving experience through its leading SUVs and off-road hybrid vehicles.

As part of our own assessment process, we have carried out multiple on-road and off-road test drives of the BAIC range and visited their advanced manufacturing facilities. The product quality is impressive. Rick Armstrong, our Founder and Executive Director, says the range delivers strong capability and a driving experience that will meet the needs of customers today and tomorrow, sitting right in the heart of the market with powertrain choice and real usability.

BAIC models are already performing strongly in right-hand drive markets including South Africa, Indonesia and Malaysia. The X55 has been especially successful, winning the Compact Family category in the 2023 South African Car of the Year awards thanks to its value, performance, efficiency, technology and safety.

BAIC International Deputy General Manager Ms Qi Xiaohui says New Zealand is a key part of the brand’s global strategy. She highlights BAIC’s commitment to intelligent, efficient and reliable mobility solutions for customers here.

According to Simon Rutherford, CEO of Auto Distribution Holdings Limited, BAIC’s style and practicality make it a natural fit for New Zealand conditions. He points to the combination of off-road expertise, advanced manufacturing and strong specification as a compelling package for our market.

Our General Manager of BAIC and Group VP for Armstrong’s, Shiguang Guo, recently tested both the updated X55 Petrol and B30 Hybrid at the BAIC Proving Ground. He found smooth and torquey power delivery along with capability that stands up confidently against established nameplates. He believes New Zealand drivers will appreciate the vehicles’ overall quality and suitability for our outdoor lifestyle.

BAIC will initially be available at Armstrong’s locations in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, with more outlets to come as the brand grows. We’ll share more details on the first models and future additions to the range in Q1 2026.
