The shift to electric driving no longer means choosing between performance, practicality and the ability to explore beyond sealed roads.
The all-new Subaru Trailseeker brings these qualities together in Subaru’s first Sport Electric Vehicle, or SEV. It combines dual-motor electric performance with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, useful ground clearance and the everyday versatility New Zealand drivers expect from a Subaru.
Two variants will be available in New Zealand:
The first New Zealand allocation has already sold out, with further vehicles expected to begin arriving from October 2026. Orders are now open through Armstrong’s Subaru Lower Hutt and Armstrong’s Subaru Christchurch.
Many electric vehicles perform well around town, but the Trailseeker has been designed for drivers who also want confidence on wet roads, gravel surfaces and less predictable terrain.
Both variants feature Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, powered by two electric motors producing a combined 280kW. This gives the Trailseeker a 0 to 100km/h time of approximately 4.5 seconds, making it the fastest production Subaru offered in New Zealand.
For most owners, however, the bigger benefit will be the immediate and controlled delivery of power. Electric motors respond quickly, while Subaru’s all-wheel-drive system manages power across the vehicle to support grip and stability.
Driving Trajectory Prediction Control also anticipates the direction the driver intends to travel and adjusts torque delivery to help keep the vehicle composed.
For low-grip conditions, Dual-Mode X-Mode and Grip Control provide added assistance. With 211mm of ground clearance, the Trailseeker also has the height required for uneven access roads, gravel tracks and outdoor destinations that may be less suitable for a conventional low-riding EV.
The Trailseeker is powered by a 74.7kWh CATL lithium-ion battery.
The standard Trailseeker AWD offers up to 533km of WLTP driving range, while the Trailseeker AWD Touring offers up to 488km.
That range makes the Trailseeker suitable for daily commuting without frequent charging, while also providing greater flexibility for longer trips. As with any electric vehicle, actual range will vary depending on temperature, driving style, road conditions, passenger load and accessory use.
When connected to a compatible DC fast charger, the Trailseeker can accept up to 150kW and charge from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 30 minutes under suitable conditions.
A 2kW AC charging cable with a standard wall plug is also included. This gives owners a simple charging option at home, although a dedicated home charger will generally provide faster and more convenient regular charging.
Both Trailseeker variants include the same 280kW dual-motor drivetrain, all-wheel-drive capability and core safety technology. The main decision is whether you prefer maximum driving range or additional premium features.
The Trailseeker AWD is likely to suit buyers who prioritise range, capability and value.
At $68,990 RRP, it offers the longest range in the line-up at up to 533km WLTP. It also includes many features that are often optional in other vehicles.
Standard equipment includes:
The heated rear seats and rear air vents are particularly useful for families, while the digital rear-view mirror helps maintain visibility when the back seats or cargo area are fully loaded.
The Trailseeker AWD Touring costs $72,490 RRP and adds features focused on comfort, parking assistance and outdoor utility.
Additional equipment includes:
The Touring model’s Vehicle-to-Load system is one of its most practical additions. It provides a 220-volt, 1,500-watt outlet powered by the vehicle’s battery.
This could be used for suitable small appliances, lighting, electronic equipment or tools while camping, travelling or working away from a fixed power source.
The main trade-off is range. The larger 20-inch wheels and additional equipment contribute to a lower WLTP range of up to 488km, compared with 533km in the Trailseeker AWD.
The electric platform allows Subaru to create a flat and usable interior floor.
The Trailseeker AWD provides 609 litres of cargo capacity, while the Trailseeker AWD Touring offers 595 litres. The difference is relatively small, and both variants provide enough space for luggage, sports equipment, groceries and family travel.
A hands-free power tailgate allows the boot to be opened using a kick sensor, which is useful when carrying bags or equipment.
Integrated roof rails are standard across the range. With the appropriate Subaru accessories fitted, the Trailseeker can carry items such as bicycles, kayaks, roof boxes and other outdoor equipment.
A 14-inch high-definition touchscreen sits at the centre of the cabin. Its large format makes navigation, media and vehicle controls easier to view without relying on a small display.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allow compatible phones to connect without a cable. Two wireless charging pads also allow the driver and front passenger to charge their devices at the same time.
A seven-inch display in front of the driver shows key information such as speed, remaining range and drive mode.
The digital rear-view mirror uses a rear-mounted camera rather than relying only on a conventional reflected view. This is especially useful when passengers, luggage or tall cargo obstruct the rear window.
There is no requirement to step up to the Touring variant to receive Subaru’s main active safety systems.
Both models include Subaru Safety Sense, with technologies such as:
A Driver Monitor System uses an interior camera to monitor signs of distraction or fatigue.
Additional driver-assistance features include Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Safe Exit Assist and panoramic camera technology.
These systems assist the driver but do not replace safe and attentive driving.
The Trailseeker offers a compelling option for drivers who want to move to an electric vehicle without giving up all-wheel-drive confidence, strong performance or practical space.
The Trailseeker AWD is the stronger choice for buyers prioritising maximum range and value. The Trailseeker AWD Touring will suit those who place greater importance on premium comfort, parking technology and the added flexibility of Vehicle-to-Load power.
