Here’s the big news. This is the first Prado to go hybrid. A 2.8 litre turbo diesel pairs up with a 48V system, so it’s smooth and efficient without losing any grunt. And underneath? That same ladder-frame chassis and full-time 4×4 that make it so capable once the tarmac runs out.
Under the bonnet, a 2.8 litre turbo diesel works with a 48V hybrid system for 150 kW and 500 Nm, sent through an 8-speed auto. No plug to worry about, because it charges itself as you drive. And for a 4WD this size, around 8.7 litres per 100km on the combined cycle is pretty tidy. Full-time 4×4, ladder-frame chassis, the lot. It’s built to work.
Off-road, it’s the real deal. You get 205mm of ground clearance, up to around 700mm of wading depth and a bunch of drive and terrain modes to suit whatever’s under the tyres. Back on the seal it settles right down. Quiet, comfy, and just as happy on the motorway as it was crossing that river an hour ago.
Climb in and you’ll spot the difference straight away. The cabin’s roomier and a good deal plusher, but it hasn’t gone soft. It’s still rugged and practical where it counts.
There’s a 12.3-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and even the entry GXL gets heated and ventilated front seats, which is a nice touch. Move up the range and you’ll pick up a bigger digital driver’s display, a head-up display and a JBL sound system. So there’s a Prado to match however you like to travel.
Room for the family and all their stuff, with five or seven seats depending on the grade and clever storage dotted throughout. Long trips are no bother. And it’s screwed together to Toyota’s usual standards, so it should keep doing them for years.
Start with the GXL and you’re already well sorted. The VX piles on more comfort and tech. The Adventure’s the one for serious off-roaders, with extra chassis kit, and the VX Limited sits up top with the most luxury of the lot. Whichever you pick, you get the same 2.8 litre hybrid diesel and full-time 4×4.
It wears the Land Cruiser name for a reason. Proven engineering, real capability and the sort of reliability that gets you home no matter what. Add Toyota’s nationwide dealer and parts network, and wherever you end up, help’s never too far away.
The GXL’s the value pick, but don’t let that fool you. You still get the 2.8 litre hybrid diesel, full-time 4×4, the 12.3-inch touchscreen and heated and ventilated front seats. The VX adds more comfort and tech on top, with the same genuine off-road hardware doing the hard yards underneath.
The Adventure’s built for those who head well past the seal, with extra chassis tech to back it up. The VX Limited goes the other way, topping the range with premium trim, a JBL sound system and the most kit you can get. Different jobs, same grunty hybrid diesel and full 4WD underneath.
