Every Hilux runs Toyota’s proven 2.8 litre turbo diesel and it makes 150 kW with up to 500 Nm of torque, so there’s plenty of grunt for towing and loaded work. Most automatics now add a 48V mild hybrid that stores energy as you brake and gives a hand off the line, which means lower fuel use and emissions without any change to the way you work it.
Underneath, it’s all business, with a ladder-frame chassis built for heavy-duty work. The 4×4 models are rated to tow up to 3,500 kg braked and the range can carry payloads that top a tonne.
