The RAV4 has been New Zealand's best-selling SUV (source: drivencarguide.co.nz) for three years running and it's easy to see why. It nails the space, comfort and economy families want, and now there are two ways to go electric: a self-charging hybrid for fuss-free everyday driving and a brand-new plug-in hybrid for quiet running around town. Discover the new Toyota RAV4.

The new RAV4 builds on everything that made it a favourite and then gives you real choice. Go for the self-charging hybrid for easy economy or step up to the plug-in hybrid for proper electric commuting with hybrid back-up for the longer trips.

Two ways to go electric.

Every RAV4 hybrid uses Toyota’s 2.5 litre system for around 143 kW and you can have it in front-wheel drive or e-Four all-wheel drive, so you get that smooth, economical drive the RAV4 is known for. The new plug-in hybrid adds a 22.7 kWh battery for genuine electric-only commuting and then switches seamlessly to hybrid power for the open road, which means you’re never planning your day around a charger.

There are three styles to suit how you drive. Core covers the everyday across the GX, GXL, XSE and Limited grades, Adventure adds rugged styling with trail and snow modes, and then the new GR Sport tops it off as the most powerful RAV4 yet at 227 kW with motorsport-derived handling.

Hybrid and plug-in hybrid power meet the space, safety and reliability that made RAV4 the number one SUV, so it fits right into the Kiwi way of life.

The interior of the Toyota RAV4.

Inside, the RAV4 is more connected and more comfortable than ever, with the flexible space that’s long made it a family favourite.

Smarter, more connected, made for life

A big central touchscreen runs Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and it grows to a larger display with a digital driver’s screen higher up the range. It’s also the first Toyota in New Zealand with Toyota Connected Services, so the myToyota Connect app lets you check the car, find it in a carpark and set the climate before you hop in.

There’s generous rear seat space and a flexible, well-shaped boot, so the RAV4 stays as practical as ever. Move up the grades and you add comforts like heated seats, a panoramic roof, a JBL sound system and a head-up display.

The everyday RAV4: hybrid Core

The Core hybrid grades are the heart of the range and they pair the 2.5 litre hybrid with your choice of front-wheel drive or e-Four all-wheel drive for around 143 kW. The GX covers the essentials, the GXL adds 18-inch alloys and a powered driver’s seat, and then the Limited tops the hybrid line-up with leather-accented trim, a panoramic roof and a JBL sound system.

The flagship: RAV4 GR Sport PHEV

The new GR Sport sits at the top and it’s the most powerful RAV4 to date. Its plug-in hybrid teams the 2.5 litre engine with a 22.7 kWh battery and front and rear motors for 227 kW, and it’ll do 0 to 100 km/h in around 5.8 seconds. Add a wider track, lighter 20-inch alloys and sportier suspension and it’s a genuinely quick SUV, while the XSE just below brings much of the same electric performance with a more everyday focus.
