Fully Electric Vehicle (BEV)

A battery electric vehicle (BEV) runs entirely on electric power stored in a rechargeable battery. With zero tailpipe emissions, lower running costs and fewer moving parts than a combustion engine, BEVs are the simplest and most cost-effective way to drive electric. Charge at home overnight or top up at one of New Zealand’s growing network of public fast chargers.

Reduced maintenance
100% Electric = no petrol costs

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

A plug-in hybrid car combines a petrol engine with an electric motor and a battery you can charge from a wall socket. Most PHEVs offer 40 to 90 kilometres of pure electric driving, which is enough to cover most daily commutes. When the battery runs low, the petrol engine takes over so range anxiety is never an issue.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)

A hybrid car pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor that recharges itself through braking and coasting, i.e. no plugging in required. You get significantly better fuel economy than a petrol car with the same refuelling convenience. Hybrids are the easiest entry point into electrified driving.

Servicing EVs – we’re ready

Armstrong’s has invested over $500,000 in specialist EV diagnostic equipment, high-voltage training and charging infrastructure across our dealerships in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.

Every new electric car we sell is backed by a genuine factory warranty and looked after by factory-trained technicians who understand electric cars inside and out. Whether you need a routine service, software update or battery health check, we have you covered.

Electric Car FAQs

  • What are the benefits of owning an electric car?

Environmental: As electric cars run on battery power alone, they don’t have a tailpipe, meaning that an electric car does not release tailpipe emissions into the air whilst driving.

Driving enjoyment: All electric cars are automatic, and with no combustion engine, they offer a smooth and quiet journey.

Cost saving: Running costs tend to be lower than petrol or diesel cars, thanks to a lower cost of charging the car at home in comparison to filling up with petrol or diesel at a service station. Some car parks even offer free charging for your electric car.

  • What is the difference between an Electric cars and a Plug-in Hybrid?

Hybrids and battery electric cars have a key difference. A hybrid electric car switches between petrol and electric power, and pure electric power, and the hybrid battery charges when braking or coasting – so there is no need to plug in. A battery electric car does not have a tailpipe resulting in zero tailpipe emissions, and runs on battery power alone, meaning that you have to plug in the car to charge it.

  • How long does an Electric car take to charge?

It depends on the charger type. A standard home wall socket takes 8 to 12 hours for a full charge (ideal overnight). A dedicated home wallbox (7kW) charges most EVs in 4 to 8 hours. Public DC fast chargers (50kW+) can add 80% charge in 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the vehicle. Many newer EVs support ultra-fast charging at 150kW or more.

  • How far can I travel on a single charge?

Many modern EVs offer between 300 and 500 kilometres of range on a single charge (WLTP rated). Some models, like the Audi Q8 e-tron, exceed 580 km. Real-world range varies based on speed, temperature, terrain and use of climate control. For daily commuting, even entry-level EVs provide more than enough range for a return trip with plenty to spare.

  • How much does it cost to charge an EV at home in New Zealand?

Based on average NZ electricity prices, charging a 60 kWh battery from empty to full costs roughly $18. That gives you approximately 350 to 400 km of range. By comparison, filling a conventional car with petrol for the same distance can cost upwards of $80. If you charge overnight on an off-peak plan, costs can drop even further.

  • Do I still need to pay road user charges (RUCs) on an EV in New Zealand?

The previous RUC exemption for light EVs ended on 1 April 2024. Light electric vehicles now pay road user charges at the same rate as other light vehicles. You can purchase RUCs online through the NZTA website. PHEV and HEV owners pay regular petrol excise duty at the pump as normal.

  • Where can I charge my EV when travelling around New Zealand?

New Zealand has a growing network of public chargers, with over 900 public charging locations nationwide. ChargeNet, Meridian, and Z Energy operate fast chargers on major highways and in urban centres. Apps like PlugShare and ChargeNet NZ show real-time charger availability. Armstrong’s dealerships also offer charging for customers.

  • Are electric cars more expensive to service?

EVs have fewer mechanical components than petrol cars: no engine oil, no timing belt, no exhaust system, and regenerative braking means brake pads can last longer. Routine EV servicing at Armstrong’s can cost less than equivalent petrol vehicle servicing. Battery health checks and software updates are included in standard service schedules.

  • How long do EV batteries last?

Many EV manufacturers warrant their batteries for 8 years or 160,000 km, whichever comes first. In practice, modern EV batteries typically retain 80% or more of their original capacity well beyond the warranty period. Battery technology has improved dramatically and degradation rates are lower than many people expect.

  • Can I charge an EV at my apartment or townhouse?

Yes, but it depends on your building’s electrical setup and body corporate rules. Many apartment buildings are now installing shared EV charging stations. A standard 3-pin plug in a garage can work for overnight charging. For faster charging, an electrician can install a dedicated wallbox. Talk to your body corporate or property manager about options, and ask us about charging solutions when you visit.

  • Are EVs safe?

EVs consistently earn top safety ratings from ANCAP and Euro NCAP. The battery pack sits low in the floor, lowering the centre of gravity and reducing rollover risk. Many EVs also come standard with advanced driver-assistance systems including autonomous emergency braking, lane-keeping assist and adaptive cruise control.

  • Can Armstrong’s help me with home charging installation?

When you purchase an EV from Armstrong’s, our team can recommend certified electricians and home charging solutions suited to your property. Many of our EV brand partners also offer home charger packages that can be arranged at the time of purchase.
